Canevin Theater Essays - Gene Kelly Awards, University Of Pittsburgh

Canevin Theater Canevin Catholic High School offers many extra curricular activities. Those students geared toward the physical challenges may choose from various athletic programs such as, basketball, soccer, and football. On the other hand, there are additional activities for those more interested in a mental challenge. These students may join such organizations anywhere from FBLA to Forensics. However, of all the extra curricular activities offered by Canevin, none excites me more than Dramatics. This paper takes a look at my last three years involvement in the annual musical productions here at Canevin. Traditionally, Canevin's dramatics has been a full-scale musical production performed in the spring. Students may audition for chorus, acting or dancing parts or they may join one of the many stage crews. During freshman year, I tried out for the musical "Working." "Working" depicted different careers through dialogue, song and dance. To my surprise, I made callbacks. When the cast list was posted, the role of Anthony Polazzo, the Mason, was awarded to me. After weeks of hard work and rehearsals, it was finally opening night. From that time on, I realized Dramatics was for me. The following year, the start-up meeting could not arrive fast enough for me. The play selected for my sophomore year was "Damn Yankees." The musical's main character was Joe Hardy. Joe wanted so drastically to play baseball for the Washington Senators, that he was willing to sell his soul to the devil. When the cast list was posted this time, I was assigned to play the role of Mr. Welch. As owner of the Washington Senator's, I was expected to portray a prestigious and confident businessman who enjoyed his cigars. In one short year, I went from a mason in overalls, to a baseball team owner decked out in a suit and tie. That's show business! "Into the Woods" was selected as the musical for the following year. The story line included various adaptations of traditional fairy tales. Well, if mason to owner wasn't extreme enough, what would you say about Cinderella's father? Junior year found me playing the character of an older man who marries for the second time, to a woman with two nagging daughters. In a house of four women, no wonder he resorted to drinking. Directed to use a silver flask as a prop and a fair amount of improvisation of libations, I portrayed the character of Cinderella's father as a drunk. When the final curtain came down closing night on "Into the Woods," there was, however, one more performance still to come. This year Canevin had been nominated for 6 Gene Kelly Awards, including Best Musical in Budget Level 2. The Gene Kelly Awards sponsored by Pittsburgh's Civic Light Opera recognizes students for excellence in High School musical theater. On the night of the awards, those schools nominated for Best Show perform on the Benedum stage a selection from their production. Extra rehearsals were scheduled, and a final practice with the Benedum orchestra was needed. I am proud to announce that Canevin was awarded the Gene Kelly for Best Costume Design and Best Musical in our division. Additionally, each year two students are asked to represent their school in a final production number. This prestigious honor is always given to two seniors. Unfortunately, this year, two of the practices fell during graduation activities. Since 5 rehearsals are mandatory, our director, Treva Rueso made her selections from the junior cast members. A fellow junior and I were ecstatic to be chosen to join members from all the participating schools in the final production number, "Keep Your Eyes on the Goal." The plethora of ecstatic people applauding at the close of the Gene Kelly's was phenomenal. It was indeed an honor to represent Canevin in this collaboration of students exercising their many talents. I have experienced many gratifying moments in my years at Canevin, but few have been as electrifying as sharing with fellow cast and crew members their ability, courage, and commitment in creating the annual school musical. The Dramatic program continues to surprise its supporters with innovative musical theater. Through my experience in putting on a musical, I have learned what it means to work as a team. The camaraderie was intense and rewarding. I look forward to this year's production of "My Fair Lady," and to once again contribute and experience the magic of the stage.

Mary Easty - Salem Witch Trials Mary Easty Facts Known for: hanged as a witch in the 1692 Salem witch trialsAge at time of Salem witch trials: about 58Dates: baptized August 24, 1634, died September 22, 1692Also known as: Mary Towne, Mary Town, Mary Esty, Mary Estey, Mary Eastey, Goody Eastie, Goody Easty, Mary Easte, Marah Easty, Mary Estick, Mary Eastick Family background: Her father was William Towne and her mother Joanna (Jone or Joan) Blessing Towne, accused once of witchcraft herself. William and Joanna arrived in America around 1640. Among Marys siblings were Rebecca Nurse (arrested March 24 and hanged June 19) and Sarah Cloyse (arrested April 4, case dismissed January 1693). Mary married Isaac Easty, a well-to-do farmer born in England, around 1655 - 1658. They had eleven children, seven alive in 1692. They lived in Topsfield, rather than either Salem Town or Village. Salem Witch Trials Rebecca Nurse, Mary Eastys sister and a well-respected matron, was denounced as a witch by Abigail Williams and arrested on March 24. Their sister, Sarah Cloyce, defended Rebecca, and was ordered arrested on April 4. Sarah was examined on April 11. A warrant was issued for Mary Eastys arrest on April 21, and she was taken into custody. The next day, she was examined by John Hathorne and Jonathan Corwin, as were Nehemiah Abbott Jr., William and Deliverance Hobbs, Edward Bishop Jr. and his wife Sarah, Mary Black, Sarah Wildes, and Mary English. During Mary Eastys examination, Abigail Williams, Mary Walcott, Ann Putnam Jr., and John Indian said that she was hurting them, and that their mouths were stopt. Elizabeth Hubbard cried Goody Easty you are the woman.... Mary Easty maintained her innocence. Rev. Samuel Parris took the notes on the examination. E: I will say it, if it was my last time, I am clear of this sin.Of what sin?E: Of witchcraft. Despite her assertions of innocence, she was sent to jail. On May 18, Mary Easty was set free; existing records do not show why. Two days later, Mercy Lewis experienced new afflictions, and she and several other girls claimed to see Mary Eastys specter; she was charged again and arrested in the middle of the night. Immediately, Mercy Lewiss fits ceased. More evidence was gathered by deposition and during several days of examination of Mary Easty in late May. A jury of inquest considered Mary Eastys case on August 3-4 and heard testimony of many witnesses. In September, officials gathered witnesses for the trial of Mary Easty among others. On September 9, Mary Easty was pronounced guilty of witchcraft by a trial jury and sentenced to death. Also found guilty that day were Mary Bradbury, Martha Corey, Dorcas Hoar, Alice Parker, and Ann Pudeator. She and her sister, Sarah Cloyce, petitioned the court together for a fayre and equall hearing of evidence for them as well as against them. They argued that they had no opportunity to defend themselves and were not allowed any counsel and that spectral evidence was not dependable. Mary Easty also added a second petition with a plea was focused more on others than herself: I petition your honors not for my own life, for I know I must die, and my appointed time is set .... if it be possible, that no more blood be shed. On September 22, Mary Easty, Martha Corey (whose husband Giles Corey had been pressed to death on September 19), Alice Parker, Mary Parker, Ann Pudeator, Wilmott Redd, Margaret Scott, and Samuel Wardwell were hanged for witchcraft. Rev. Nicholas Noyes officiated at this last execution in the Salem witch trials, saying after the execution, What a sad thing it is to see eight firebrands of hell hanging there. In a quite different spirit, Robert Calef described Mary Eastys end in his later book, More Wonders of the Invisible World: Mary Easty, Sister also to Rebecka Nurse, when she took her last farewell of her Husband, Children and Friends, was, as is reported by them present, as Serious, Religious, Distinct, and Affectionate as could well be expressed, drawing Tears from the Eyes of almost all present. After the Trials In November, Mary Herrick testified that Mary Eastys ghost visited her and said that she was innocent. In 1711, Mary Eastys family received 20 pounds compensation and Mary Eastys attainder was reversed. Isaac Easty died on June 11, 1712.

Contemporary Issues in Education - Research Paper Example Mostly, books, journals, and online sources were incorporated in the study with a view of collecting the most comprehensive information that would help expand the dimensions of the debate. The study was primarily based on public school students in the United States. However, the tone of the arguments extended beyond the specifics in the American context to a global context. From the literature explored, it was found out that both the supporters and those opposed to the culture of school uniforms have important points that merit some critical focus. There was no final answer to the question regarding the relevance of school uniforms for students in public schools. Few empirical studies have been carried out concerning the preference of the students, teachers, parents, and general society on the matter of school uniforms in public schools. However available qualitative studies provide strong indications of fragmented support on either side of the divide. Currently, no definite or absolute positions exist regarding the subject matter. Other important factors that have weighed into the controversy include the possible impact of the school uniform policy on academic perf ormance, cognitive development, and personality influences (Burkemper, 2008). The debate on school uniforms has been stretched beyond the limits of academic matters to incorporate societal perceptions and the prevalent risks that lie on both sides of the argument. Further, comparative studies conducted on the different aspects of the debate have produced competing expert opinions on the matter. It would seem that there can be no definite last answer regarding the question of whether or not students in public schools should wear school uniforms. Due to change of climate Eastern Europ contries are becoming tour places and attracting the visitor to there. Thousand of visitors are travelling to Eastern countries every year just for only visiting the places.
